With the coming of spring our Teton Valley Foundation Cutthroats Youth Hockey Program has wrapped up a successful season.
Thanks to the addition of chillers to Kotler Ice Arena, our youth hockey teams enjoyed their second full season of ice. With ample available practice time our kids have enjoyed the most ice in the history of the rink. Participation and growth of the program is abound, and the good vibes continue to spread through sport.
Season Recap by Age Level:
Mini Mites: Coached by Hans Wilbrecht, Dave Hudascko, Adam Riley, Rick Kincaid & Dave Udy
Mites: Coached by Dustin Smith, Shawn Stitt, Jake Bynum, Pierre Sarthou, Shane Anderson, Nick Jacob, Duane Mortenson & Matt Evans
The Mites started the season with a bang! With tons of enthusiasm and desire to learn the game. With such a consistent long season, every athlete improved and the fun factor shot through the roof as the season went on. We attended 5 tournaments and were competitive at every game. We enjoyed friendly games in Jackson and a weekend of friendly games in Pinedale. Our athletes saw a lot of action on the ice. Every athlete developed in so many ways. All basic skills, teamwork and positioning, were exceptional! Our last game against Jackson in Pinedale was definitely a highlight. The team showed true grit and perseverance as they battled in their final game. Watching the Mites this year definitely made all of the parents and spectators love the sport of Hockey!
Squirts: Coached by Gil Hundley, Brendan McHargue, Price Gilroy, Patrick Gilroy & Jeff Potter
Peewees: Coached by Dave Lienert, Crista Pentz, George Steiner, Colin Hill & Jeff Loban
This year we had our largest PeeWee squad to date with 25 players. Some skaters have been playing for the last 8 years. Six players were new to the game and made tremendous progress throughout the season. We enjoyed 49 days of practice, 4 tournaments and 6 friendly games for a total of 71 hours on the ice! This combined with the time many kids spent at family stick and puck as well as open skate definitely went a long way towards making our program stronger. These 21 boys and 4 girls gave it their best each time they stepped on the ice.
Bantams: Coached by Willy Warner, Tim Adams, Rich Rinaldi & Josh Weltman
The Bantam players and families enjoyed a fabulous season. We had three players new to the Valley play with us this year, and we had one player new to hockey train as a goalie. They were all an excellent asset to our team. We played in 5 tournaments: Butte, Salmon, Jackson, Home, and the Spring Fling in Salt Lake City. We placed 3rd in two tournaments. Our home tournament on President’s Day weekend was a great success. Butte, Salmon/Hailey, McCall, Idaho Falls, and Utah Oval Dawgs traveled through a snow storm to play with us. Most importantly, our players and parents were excellent hockey ambassadors at all our tournaments.
High School – Inaugural Year!: Coached by Steve O’Brien, Dan Hundere & Wyatt Watkins
There were 12 High School Players in this the inaugural year of High School hockey including 1 Senior, 2 Juniors, 4 Sophomores and 5 Freshmen. Some players came back to play this season after missing anywhere from 2-4 years of skating. With the fact that we had players of various skill levels and a short bench we knew it would be tough to compete and the players held their own. The players improved greatly during the season, during which we played in 4 Tournaments and 3 friendlies for a total of 19 games. The players finished strong at State and bravely blazed the trail for the future generations of High School Hockey in Teton Valley.
